A unique teenage perspective on Wicca, elemental powers, and love.

Playing with Fire Devil Den Book 1 eBook April Ann ShaNeil Harada Kassiah Waddell

The authors have fashioned an interesting and well-written tale about a pair of teenagers whose lives and relationships are complicated by witchcraft. Both attend Devil's Den High school, where the young man, Aidan, is convinced that strange things are happening to the student body. His opinion is suspect inasmuch as his mother is a Wiccan and he appears to exhibit strange powers himself. Aidan meets Kyla, a newcomer to Devil's Den, and promptly warns her not to break any school rules. Why the big deal? Kyla wonders. Both kids come from broken families and seem to share a common bond. Their relationship unfolds from each character's point of view in alternating chapters that often include journal entries. While this is not a love story, Aidan and Kyla are thinking about each other and concerned about their relationship. I was impressed by the authors' ability to get inside the minds of two adolescents and convey the landscape convincingly.

The plot is, of course, more complicated than boy meets girl in high school. As noted, something strange may be happening in that school. Aidan is convinced, and makes a bit of a nuisance of himself trying to persuade Kyla, who has doubts. Complicating matters further, she meets a handsome Adonis named Derrick who quickly entrances her; Aidan is soon outcast. What happens next? The plot may seem familiar, with the outcome predictable. It would be, except for the witchcraft angle. To pique your interest but avoid spoiling the plot, I'll mention a few later tidbits: magic amulets, fire, disembodied voices, magic spells, prophetic dreams, collapsing teenagers, and a coven of witches. This novel has a simple plot, two splendid main characters, and this reader found it difficult to set down.

Playing with Fire Devil Den Book 1 eBook April Ann ShaNeil Harada Kassiah Waddell Reviews

Playing With Fire is the first book in a new series called Devil's Den. A girl named Kyla moves to Ethelsville, Wyoming in the middle of the school year and has a lot more to deal with when she arrives, than just all of the back work for class. During her first day, Kyla finds herself surrounded by people who seem to do everything too perfectly, without personality or any substance whatsoever. Everyone seems to be a walking corpse, except a shy boy named Aidan who is dealing with a "gift" that is getting out of control, and a boy she meets when she is out running.

Playing With Fire has its own charm and all of it belongs to the characters. Kyla and Aidan each have their own problems and in order to unravel the mystery of the "zombification," they must overcome their personal struggles and reach for the truth. The characters are sent on a roller coaster of deceit, doubt and fear, delving into magic and accepting things that cannot change in order to bring order to the chaos their lives have been consumed by. In order to find the culprit, the characters must open their eyes and fight for the truth instead of trying to avoid it.

Almost as soon as I began reading, I was completely enveloped in this story. All of the characters are so real and the lines of "good" and "bad" are melded together as always they are in life. I found myself being frustrated when the characters were frustrated, angry when they were angry and upset when they were upset. Connecting with Kyla and Aidan was instantaneous. There is a great deal of dramatic irony in the novel, as we get a point of view from both Aidan and Kyla. I found myself doing the whole "If only they knew ______!" thing many times throughout the novel, like when you're watching a movie and you're cheering for a character to do one thing and they do the other. It is agonizing! Agonizing, I say! And any proper novel should be agonizing at least once in its pages.

The character building in Playing With Fire is phenomenal, especially considering the amount of pages contained. I would definitely recommend reading this great work and meeting the characters for yourself. It was a treat to read Playing With Fire, and the storyline is unique and not overly done. The reactions of every character feel completely natural and slipping into their shoes was no problem at all.
I enjoyed the book a lot.  I liked how the book is written from two different points of view.  I also liked the tension between the two main characters, it made me want to yell at the girl ,“just believe him already.“
I love how the book starts off with bang by throwing us right into the action of a church fire. It was really descriptive and I love how it set the stage for the rest of the story.  I could totally related to the young boy allowing himself to be talked into some dangerous stupid  stunt in hopes of gaining acceptance by his peers only to have it all go horribly wrong.
It certainly kept me wanting to read more.
The only real draw back I could see when writing from the girl‘s perspective, the author over did it a bit with her exclamations of how gorgeous her other love interest.

Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
