So I'm sad to write this because I really liked this series but "In Dublin's Fair City" is just too contrived for my taste. It starts out plausibly and like all the other books in this series, involves a number of mysteries. This time, Molly has been paid to go back to Ireland to find a long lost sister of one of Molly's clients. On her way to Ireland, she gets involved in a scheme to pretend to be somebody else and that scheme basically leads to her reluctant involvement in Ireland's fight for independence from England. This fighting for Ireland part, the people she gets involved in, all the various coincidences, the plots they hatch, all of it is just not believable.Another big problem is that there is a big lead up to the final scene but then it ends abruptly and Molly narrates two paragraphs about the aftermath of everything that was going on. It's just a complete let down and frankly, kind of a cop out.
Unfortunately, I did not like this one. Here's hoping that the next on is better.

Molly won’t give up even though the odds are against her. She is loyal, dedicated to do what she hired to do even when she wants to quit . I liked seeing Dublin through her eyes as she views it differently than she remembers it.
When Molly's offered the chance to go home as well as earn some well-needed money, it sounds too good to be true. Then she's offered even more money to pose as someone else. Everything starts to go wrong before she even makes it to Ireland, and as she tries to complete her job, she soon finds herself in a battle for her life. In Dublin's Fair City is another great book in the Molly Murphy series.
The characters, the plot and he storyline improve with every book, but the tendency for quick endings are a bit off-putting. It's almost as if the Editor has said, "That's enough. Tie it up " personally I would like a soft landing, but each book is good enough to make me get the next, and the next is better yet...
The Molly Murphy Series is just a lot of fun. There is danger, intrigue, history and romance. Her friends are interesting, and the cultural traditions of the times are disturbing! The time period is early 20th Century New York City, for the most part. Molly gets herself in all kinds of difficult situations, which she also manages to get herself out of, using her gift of detection and logic. The characters seem like best friends after reading the series for awhile, and after I finish a book, I miss them. If you like historical detective fiction, and you like it light, you would probably enjoy this series.
Rhys Bowen delights the reader with her unique style of captivating our hearts and minds when writing of Molly Murphy. Molly is there for the long haul - no matter the situation or the case she undertakes in her fledgling New York City detective agency. Molly is able to take care of business and family and friends at all times, just by her wits and cleverness and good sense.
There is only one negative about the entire Molly Murphy series for which Rhys Bowen cannot seem to manage a solution - the book is over far too quickly!! The reader wants to "play with Molly" just a little longer, because being in her presence, the reader shares the fun and quirkiness of Molly's life. Anyone who follows the series is not too sure of a long-term future Molly might have with Daniel Sullivan, the love interest we've embraced through six books, Murphy's Law, Death of Riley, For the Love of Mike, In like Flynn, Oh Danny Boy and now the delightful, In Dublin's Fair City. But most assuredly, the intrigue Bowen creates will cause you to champion her next book, whenever it arrives.
If you want a little fun diversion in your reading, something joyful and fascinating, start with the first book and take the carnival ride through the entire series. You will not regret it - in fact, you will love the experience like a fond memory of that wonderful "day at the beach".
Molly Murphy escaped to New York after she was attacked by the son of the estate that her family lived on. Once there, she found that she could make a sometimes living as a detective. Now she has been hired by another transplanted Irishman to go to Ireland to find his long-lost sister, abandoned when his family fled famine and she was too sick to be allowed on the ship.
I like this series a lot, and this is one of the best yet. It can be read on its own, but I think it's better as part of the series, so if you can, begin with "Murphy's Law."
As always, a five star performance by Molly. This time, in Dublin, she knows that she can never go home again. It is a bit poignant when she realizes that she has no family any longer. Her home is in America, and her friends are her family. Molly really comes of age in this one. Her adventures never fail to entertain and this is no exception. I admire her spirit. It is great escape reading....pure entertainment.
