I admit that I'm in the minority here, which is what makes me so disappointed. After all the reviews I expected to love this book especially since it's one of my favorite genres. I made it to the 25% mark and that was only by sheer stubbornness (since I paid so much for it), but I finally called it quits. My biggest and really only problem is the insane amount of heavy English accent. It sounds ridiculous since I usually love it when characters have an accent, but this was just too much. Every other word was English slang. Maybe I could've handled it if it was just the one character speaking it but there were several, and they supposedly live in California and still speak that way?? Not realistic. Even the American characters didn't speak correctly. All in all it drove me crazy, and while the storyline is enjoyable the characters were not.

Johnny Be Good Paige Toon 9781847390448 Books Reviews

*REVIEW WITH SOME SPOILERS*

Johnny Be Good was surprisingly entertaining despite it not being the typical celebrity romance novel that I like to read. You know, the one where the regular girl falls in love with the super famous guy and vice-versa and all they have to contend with are the tabloids and other women trying to steal the guy.

Meg, our protagonist, does fall in love with rock God, Johnny Jefferson (her boss, btw), but their romance is no fairy tale. I think it's pretty realistic because Johnny doesn't really admit that he has feelings for Meg, he has a serious drug problem, and treats Meg like dirt. I kept wanting to shout at her to wake up and get the hell out of there but I couldn't blame her for sticking around as long as she did. I could relate to her. No, I've never been involved with any celebrity (thank god for that) but I've fallen hard for guys before and acted like Meg did. Like a complete idiot.

The cliffhanger at the end was sort of mean but since the sequel has already been published, it's all good.
This is hands down my favorite book, and I am scared that my review won't be able to do it justice. I have always been fan of bad boys books, but this book is something totally different than all the others. This book has put a standard for me. This book has a great plot. A strong heroine. And a bad boy that is more than swear words, and f**king. There is a great balance, and no rushed romance © I am a bit tired of reading stories where the couple have sex on page three, and the hero decide he no longer wants to be a bad boy, because the sex was great. It's not realistic to me, but this book felt very realistic to me.

The main character Meg is the best. She's sweet, professional, caring and such a lovely person on so many levels. I enjoyed reading her story. She's just a regular girl, getting the chance of a lifetime to work in Hollywood, and no less for the world famous Rock Star Johnny Jefferson.
She's not a fan of him - she's more of a pop girl - but enjoys that her friends is jealous about her new job. She's down to earth, and a people pleaser. She just wants to make sure people are well cared for, and solve people's problems - even when the person in question won't admit they have a problem.

Johnny is a bad boy, rock star, man child and Meg becomes more his babysitter than his assistant. I don't really know how to describe Johnny. One moment I LOVE him, the next I HATE him with such passion. Deep inside he's a good boy, but his actions...... makes him to the most dangerous person ever. Yet I couldn't help but fall in love with him. I fancy him like mad. I really do, and I normally don't fancy heroes in books, (I'm more of a couple cheer) but Johnny.... god do I fancy him. I don't know what it is about him - the way he always leaves a buzz, how exciting his life is or because he's such a mystery. I think I'm a bit like Meg - I'm fascinated and scared of him.

Christian is Johnny's best mate, and a great friend to Meg too. I love when the three of them are together. They are like this little tight family. I love the way they talk, and is there for each other no matter what. Meg is ecstatic that both of them - Johnny and Christian - accept her as their friend. I love the trios dynamic.

The author is great at telling a story that captivates, entertain, and bring you to a whole new world. It's really fun to be in Los Angeles with Meg. It's a fast paced (meaning no unnecessary story fillers), funny and mysterious at times. There is a lot to wonder about along with Meg while reading. She's in the world of gossip after all!

I have read this book more than 20 times, since I bought it a couple of years back, and every time I read it it's still new, heartbreaking and funny as the first time I read it. And I'm still sick with longing to know more about them and their World, when the book ends, and I know you will be too.

And to help you; Baby Be Mine is the next book about Meg ;)
As an admitted romance novel addict, I usually hop all over new authors and series. Because frankly, in this genre, you have to pick through a lot of dross to find a few gems. "Johnny Be Good" was released 4 years ago, so I'm not sure why it took me so long to find it. All I can say is, based on the fact that I'm the first person writing a review of the book, I'm not alone in my ignorance. This book and its follow-up (Baby Be Mine) were recommended to me on Goodreads, and I'm so glad I gave them a try. Definitely read the books in order - I tried hopping in at book 2, but then put it on hold while I went back to read book 1. To be honest I liked book 2 a bit better, but book 1 was still very good. The author has an engaging writing style, and even more importantly, she's a COMPETENT/GOOD writer. None of the usual romance author ticks filling in a character's entire back story in 2 paragraphs (makes me want to scream); wrapping up in a rushed, trite HEA ending (pounding my head against the wall). You know what I'm talking about... I want my characters to EARN their happily-ever-after!

Now, don't get me wrong - Paige Toon isn't the next Jane Austen. But it's so refreshing to read a contemporary romance author who seems to have actually taken a writing class or two along the way. Her characters have depth. They feel pain and joy, they make mistakes, and they do some wonderful and terrible things to and for each other. In other words, they're human.

If you are a fan of authors like Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Rachel Gibson, then this book might be right up your alley. Not quite as funny, and a bit darker, but still a similar tone and subject matter. I hope you like it as much as I did, but even if it isn't exactly your cup of tea, I defy you to give it a ranking below 3 stars. My only beef is the price $9.99? Really, Simon and Schuster? Like I said, Paige Toon is NOT Jane Austen. Note to the publishers I think you'd actually sell some copies if you lowered the price a few bucks. And the covers? Meh. These books deserve better.
