I just finished this book. I was entranced into the story from the beginning to the end. Not only that it is a mystery developing at an exciting pace with turns and twists, but it also has great scenes and a skillful character development that left me with the feeling that I know the people, rooted or disliked them or wished to for some to be found. It is also placed in an interesting time in the history of United States, post the Civil War, start of Rail Roads with immigration problems of the time and gold rush in the west.I can't imagine someone not loving it.

Who Owns Arizona? A Drew Steele Civil War Mystery Drew Steele Civil War Mysteries Volume 1 EE "Doc" Murdock 9780923178161 Books Reviews
This is a gripping western tale, in the Drew Steele mystery series. Set in the old West, during the railroad expansion period, Steele goes up against some rough adversaries in his quest to sole multiple murders. This feels like an authentic glimpse of that era, with some very convincing field medical practices. Good reading. JC
Not only did the well wrought plot of WHO OWNS ARIZONA keep me keep me reading way past my bed times, its setting in the dusty and dangerous old west made my interest in history burn with a bright flame.
All the characters are intriguing and totally believable because they possess, in varying degrees, all the foibles that make us human. The good guys aren't saints nor the bad guys demons. They have life experiences and personalities that drive them to do what they do.
Doc's beautifully crist description of action and environment excited all my senses, and made me feel like I was indeed there, riding shotgun with Drew Steele, the intrepid San Francisco detective. Read this book for a wild literary ride that will keep you guessing until the last page. I've already begun THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR, Doc's next novel that begins where Who Owns Arizona ends. I fervently hope Drew Steele will live in many more novels by Doc.
Who Owns Arizona? A Drew Steele Civil War Mystery (Drew Steele Civil War Mysteries) (Volume 1)
Once I've started reading "Who Owns Arizona? A Drew Steele Civil War Mystery", it was almost impossible to let it go till I got to the last page. It has all the elements that make a story irresistible great blood and flesh characters, suspense, fast pace full of action, scenes so real that when you see you are there swallowing dust inside wagons while feeling scents, sounds and textures from an interesting era. On top of all, you have American History told in a fantastic way. Drew Steele owns my heart, my admiration and my total attention. He is a hero, a great, sophisticated, humble, and very human guy. It was hard to let this story go, but luckily I'm already reading Volume 2...
If not for the occasional sexual parts in a whorehouse, or with Drew as a lover, I would recommend this book for middle school boys, especially reluctant readers. It is a disappointment as an adult book. Poorly edited, full of shootings and actions that don't seem to have to make sense, it reads like a tv or movie script.
Good characters and story. A nice adventure through the wild west with an improbable but suspenseful twist and some interesting mixing of history.
